Remembering Larry “Crazy Larry” Gene Graspy

Larry Gene Graspy passed away on his beloved South Side on April 23, 2024 after his long battle with prostate cancer.

Larry was born September 23, 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was raised by Amos and Ladina Graspy, who nurtured his love for fishing. As Larry entered the workforce he maintained many different occupations, ranging from construction to car detailing.

Larry had a burning passion for the Iowa Hawkeyes and Des Moines Buccaneers. Larry was nicknamed “Crazy Larry” and recognized city-wide as the unofficial mascot. Crazy Larry would rile the audience up with his deafening chants, as well as his off and on ice antics. His other hobbies consisted of going to sprint car races with his sons and fishing/camping with his grandchildren. Larry’s 10 grandchildren were his pride and joy, truly earning him the title of “Best Grandpa Ever”. Larry had the honor of meeting his first great-grandchild before he passed, and he loved telling anyone he ran into about them.

Larry Gene Graspy is survived by his sons, Alfie, Travis (Lynnette Fisher) and Glen “Troy” Graspy; son-in-law, Salvador Nunez; grandchildren, Alex (Bailey), Sarah and Wil Graspy, Noah, Nadrian, Nalayna and Nariana Nunez and Easton, Wyatt and Patrick Graspy; great-granddaughter, Charlotte Graspy; mother, mother Ilene (Graspy) Strable; sister, Donna (Strable) Kent; and many extended family members.

Larry was greeted in Heaven by his daughter, Brandi (Graspy) Nunez; who he missed dearly. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Ladina and Amos Graspy; sisters, Dorothy (Strable) Wessel, Diane (Strable) Wise; brother, Dennis Strable; and many other loved ones.

Family will greet friends Friday, May 3, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street with the funeral service to follow at 12:00 p.m. Larry will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
